Level 1 Course Features:

The Level 1 Liberal Arts Course is designed to be an early elementary interactive course for young learners that will cultivate their love and delight for reading and story. Mrs. Gregor will work closely with parents to deepen the innate wonder young learners possess and create a community among the students as they gather regularly to read and enjoy great children's storybooks. The course will contain the following components:

  • Literature-based lessons and projects from experienced homeschool families delivered online
  • Ongoing resources and support for parents and students
  • Pacing and structure with ample opportunities for expanded and deeper engagement with course topics
  • A wide variety of carefully selected texts, including:
    • Poems
    • Stories and quotations from Saints
    • Stories and passages from Holy Scripture
    • Myths, legends, and fables from around the world

Level 1 Course Skills:

Students who enroll in the course should be able to...

  • Identify all letters of the alphabet and most of their sounds
  • Sound out simple 3 or 4 letter words (with minimal help)
  • Draw a picture and tell about it
  • Identify their base shapes
  • Identify colors
  • Follow along in a book
  • Stay focused on one activity for at least 15 minutes

During the course, students will practice...

Reading

  • Reading selections of the best illustrated books
  • Vocabulary
  • Pronunciation and phonics
  • Learning about the world through a wide variety of literature

Discussion

  • Listening skills
  • Retelling narratives
  • Answering questions leading to definition, example, and comparison

Composition

  • Completing creative projects on literary themes
  • Presenting in class using “show and tell” format
  • Writing vocabulary words from literature selections
