Level 7 Catechism Course Description:

In this course, we will study early objections to Christianity and Christian responses. We will begin with the ancient philosopher Porphyry's polemic against Christians and then turn to the great Christian apologetic text, Contra Celsum, in which Origen of Alexandria responds powerfully to the pagan intellectual, Celsus. With these two texts we will read carefully and consider deeply the serious concerns pagans had with Christianity as well as the profundity with which early Christians rose to the ancient challenge.

Course Texts:

  • Required, Primary Text: From Eighth Day Books: Origen's Contra Celsum, translated and edited by Henry Chadwick. Contra Celsum is also available through Amazon here.

  • Additionally: Students will also read fragments from Porphyry's Against the Christians which will be provided in PDF format and students will print at home.

Please note: The cost of books is not included in the course fee.
